This year’s competition received many inspiring submissions that demonstrated originality, imagination, and thoughtful artistic expression. After careful evaluation, the Top 12 winning artworks have been selected to be exhibited alongside Be One Gallery’s artists at VOA6: Pause to Begin | 26 May - 1 June 2026 at ION Art Gallery, L4, ION Orchard, Singapore.

The exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to experience diverse artistic perspectives from both established and emerging artists. Each selected artwork represents not only creative skill, but also the personal stories, emotions, and unique perspectives of these young talents.

Artist Sonia Adlakha is a multidisciplinary artist whose work has evolved over decades through both artistic practice and experience in interior and spatial design. Her unique approach brings together texture, materiality, and a strong sense of space, and we’re delighted to learn more about the inspirations and experiences behind her work today.

About the Artist

Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your background & How did you first get interested in art?

I’m a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, texture, and material exploration. My practice has evolved over several decades, shaped as much by lived experience as by formal learning. Alongside art, I spent many years working in interior and spatial design, which gave me a deep sensitivity to surfaces, materials, and scale. When I returned fully to the studio, all of that experience quietly became part of my language as an artist.

Art was never something I consciously “got into” at one moment. It was always present. I grew up in a home filled with creativity, music, literature and conversations around these ideas. My father was a musician. My grandfather and uncle were painters and architects. They encouraged observation, skill and discipline from a young age.

For me, painting feels instinctive—both as a response to the world and a way of listening inward.

Artistic Process & Style

How would you describe your art style?
My work exists between abstraction and subtle figuration, often creating contemplative spaces that feel open-ended rather than narrative. I hope to evoke stillness, memory and inner landscapes through layered surfaces, light, texture and restrained symbolism. I want viewers to pause and discover their own emotional and spiritual connection with the work rather than offer fixed meaning.

Can you walk us through your creative process from idea to finished piece?
My process often begins with research and writing before I start painting. The idea and concept need to become clear and, in a way, believed. From there on, the actual work is approached through this understanding and developed intuitively.

There is always a sense of intention, almost like a consistent practice of prayer. At times, there is also a sense of urgency, as if translating thoughts into abstract form.

Gradually, layers are built, and sometimes removed in parts. The work progresses through reflection. When I feel stuck, I step away and return to it later, allowing a new conversation to begin with the canvas.

Inspiration & Influences

What inspires you most—other artists, nature, society, personal experiences?
Inspiration comes from many places. Books, conversations, emotions, silence. But more than anything, it comes from observation and presence. I think artists are naturally more receptive, and that openness allows things to enter and transform into something else.

Are there specific artists or art movements that influenced your style?
I have been deeply moved by artists who create emotional and contemplative spaces through colour, light and restraint. Artists such as Mark Rothko for emotional depth, J. M. W. Turner for light and atmosphere, and V. S. Gaitonde for silence and meditative abstraction have been particularly influential.
Indian philosophy, Zen Buddhism, architecture, and various healing modalities that I practice have also been absorbed into a visual language that feels increasingly personal.

How do your cultural background or personal experiences influence your art?

My upbringing had a strong influence on me. There was an emphasis on reading, philosophy, meditation and alternate healing practices. All of this naturally found its way into my work. Living in different countries, and learning from teachers and mentors across cultures, has deepened my sense of a shared human experience. This quiet universality often underlies my practice.

Challenges & Growth

What challenges have you faced as an artist, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges has been staying true to my own pace and artistic voice in a world that often values constant visibility and rapid output. With the pressures of social media, technology and ever-changing trends, it can be easy to feel the need to constantly reinvent oneself simply to stand out.
Over time, I have learned to trust stillness, process and consistency—allowing my work to evolve organically and reveal its own direction and voice.

Has your style evolved over time? If yes, how?
Very much so. My earlier work was more observational and representational. Over time, it has become increasingly intuitive, layered and concept-driven, while moving further into abstraction.
While the materials and visual language have evolved, the emotional and philosophical core of my work has remained consistent.

Advice & Insight

What advice would you give aspiring artists?

Stay with it. Practice regularly. Observe deeply. And don’t wait for perfect conditions. Work with what you have.

How do you see the local art scene evolving in Singapore?
Having lived and exhibited in Singapore, I have seen its art scene become increasingly dynamic and globally aware. Its multicultural environment creates a natural exchange of ideas, which I find deeply inspiring.
I also see growing curiosity towards contemporary practices that are rooted in tradition and open to experimentation, something I resonate with in my own work.

How do you balance creativity and commercial aspects of art?

For me, the work always comes first. If the process is honest, everything else finds its place. It is important to remain grounded in your practice while also being aware of the ecosystem you are part of.

Be One Gallery is honored to collaborate with Raynante “Nante” Carandang, presenting his works in VOA6: Pause to Begin, an international art exhibition taking place from 26 May to 1 June 2026 at ION Art Gallery, ION Orchard, Singapore. In this feature, we speak with the artist to learn more about his artistic journey, inspirations, and creative process.

Can you introduce yourself & share a little about your background?

Hi, I’m Raynante C. Carandang, though I’m known as Nante Carandang in the art circle. I was born in Manila and raised in Batangas, Philippines. I am currently a full-time visual artist. I developed an interest in art during childhood—I loved drawing on the walls and floors of our home. In elementary school, I began joining art competitions and was fortunate to win some. That encouraged me to pursue art seriously. I later graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, major in Advertising, in 1995 from one of the top universities in Manila.

How would you describe your art style?

My art style is hyperrealism.

What materials or techniques do you prefer, and why?

I primarily use oil paints, though I also use acrylics for some modern works. I prefer oil because it dries slowly, making it more workable—especially for my dry brush hyperrealism technique.

Can you walk us through your creative process?

As a full-time artist, I paint every day from morning until evening. I begin by gathering references to ensure authenticity. Choosing what to paint is deeply emotional—I need to feel something from the image, as if my heart and soul are guiding the decision.

Before I start painting, I always say a prayer, and I pray again when I finish. I believe that God is guiding my hands—that He is the one painting through me to share messages and inspiration.

Are there themes or messages in your work?

I paint God’s creations—fruits, birds, animals, and landscapes—capturing them as realistically as possible. My goal is to preserve their beauty, as some may one day disappear due to environmental destruction.

This advocacy led me to establish Creation Art Gallery in my hometown, where I aim to remind people to protect nature and all forms of life.

What inspires your work?

My inspiration comes from my love for art and my desire to serve a greater purpose through it. Nature, my advocacy, and my passion for mentoring young artists continue to drive me.

Are there artists or movements that influence you?

Yes, I admire both Filipino and international artists such as Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Picasso, and Pollock.

How do your background and experiences shape your art?

My cultural heritage gives me a strong sense of identity as a Filipino, which I am proud to share with the world. My life experiences have taught me patience, resilience, and courage—qualities that deeply influence my artistic expression.

What challenges have you faced in your journey?

One of my biggest challenges was stepping away from art for 15 years to work in a corporate role, as I wanted to provide stability for my family and support my children’s education. I have no regrets—it was my responsibility as a husband and father.

In 2013, I returned to art, starting from scratch. At first, my work went unnoticed, but I stayed committed. I followed my mantra: “Pinta lang nang pinta” (Never stop painting). I believe growth comes from continuously improving oneself, not competing with others.

How has your work evolved?

My work has become more purposeful and focused on inspiring others. That is now the core of my practice.

Which of your works do you feel most connected to?

My still life paintings of mangoes resonate strongly with collectors. Many say they can almost smell and taste the fruit just by looking at them, which is very meaningful to me.

What advice would you give aspiring artists?

Never stop painting. Consistent practice is the best way to grow. Enjoy your journey, stay grounded, and always have faith—first in God, then in your work.

How do you view the art scene in Singapore?

 I see Singapore’s art scene as vibrant and advanced. I’m excited to experience it and connect with local artists, as it will surely enrich my own creative journey.

How do you balance creativity and commercial success?

I focus on painting for joy rather than for selling. When you create with genuine passion, collectors will naturally connect with your work because they can feel the emotion behind it.

How do you recharge creatively?

I take breaks by going out—driving, observing nature, or simply stepping away from the studio. When I return, I feel refreshed and ready to create again.

If your art could speak, what would it say?

“Thank you, Lord, for all your wonderful creations.”
