Christina Yew As a self-taught artist, without the privilege of a taught environment, my learning path has always been that of experimentation – in techniques, in medium, in forms and most of all, the artistic conception of ideas. My preoccupation: With a keen mind to question and to explore, profound issues excite me. They present a challenging narrative so ready for me to decipher; and ultimately to my pleasure – to form my own point of view, a re-interpretation, a re-presentation. Such is the excitement of a creative process! More often, my works are reflective of universal issues like human existence, human experience, and the idea of reality, to name a few. In addition, nature has been my constant context that facilitates my expression. My practice: While I had used ink predominantly for its vibrancy, I do not adhere to just one medium. I am equally eager to engage in acrylic, and in forms – three dimensional and installations. Painting as a leisure, I am fortunate to have a free mind to paint without constraints. |

Pateo The day the nation stood still. It was the era of doom and gloom in the year 1942 when the 2nd world war broke up; the year I was born. In the vicinity of the farmland of Yio Chu Kang where I was raised. The atrocity of the war brought adversity and poverty to the nation. Therefore, the progress of infrastructure was on slow pace and transportation was on a standstill because there were not many vehicles on the road. For one indication would tell the night-soil bucket system lasted for more than a decade. As years passed it was time that I received my primary education at the punggol district which was four kilometres from home. Despite of the arduous and cumbersome journey to school, it turned up into opportunities to capture picturesque scenes along the ways. The rustic landscapes emitted vibrant hues that became useful images for my paintings. My passion in arts remained strong. I made profound progress among other curriculums taught in class. At seventeen I enrolled in fine art tutorial with Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in 1959 under the coaching of Mdm. Geogett Chen but sadly to say that I have not completed the course due to finical circumstances. Somehow before long I was fortunate to get employment in an advertising agency. Initially I started off as an apprentice; through the years I achieved with numerous promotions. Finally at age 65 I fell back to my career in visual art. When I discovered my resourceful talents all the latent memories in my mind would be retrieved on paintings, leaving a legacy of aesthetic events that our young generation might not have known off. |

Sourav S Bhowmick Sourav is a professor in computer science at NTU, Singapore. He doesn’t see any difference between a scientist making a discovery and an artist making a painting. So when he is not tinkering with data, he tinkers with paints and charcoal. His artistic interest lies in blending realism and expressionism styles of painting related to contemporary global and local issues such as refugee crisis, climate change, human behavior, etc. Sourav strongly believes that "art doesn't change the world but it may change the way we see the world." Fundamental to all major problems in this planet (from climate change to refugee crisis), he believes that we first need to change the way we see the world before we can address any problem. Sourav hopes that his paintings will impact positively the way people view various challenges related to our planet, and take concrete steps to alleviate them. To this end, he has given public exhibitions of his paintings in Singapore for various causes such as refugee crisis. Some of his paintings have been sold for social causes such as contributions to elderly care and children suffering from rare diseases. |

Tze Chau Wong For the past decade I have experimented with expressionistic, surrealistic, pop, conceptual and abstract styles as well as performance art, but my theme remains the same: Oneness. It is about finding the harmony between different forms and beings regardless of culture, race, language and religion. I studied architecture and philosophy when I was younger and started painting in 2010 at the age of 32. Since 2011 I have participated in some group shows in Singapore, Thailand and India. There was a breakthrough in 2018 as I had my first solo show at a commercial gallery in Singapore. After two attempts I was overjoyed to win the UOB Painting of the Year (established category) in 2019 with my dot painting 'War and Peace' in which I wrote the words 'war' and 'peace' in both Arabic and Hebrew with dots. I strongly believe in the transformative power of arts. I always strive to create artworks that are both visually appealing and thought provoking. My ultimate goal is to create a bridge between different realms. The world is increasingly divided but I believe that there is harmony if we see beyond differences. The ancient concept of Oneness has always been fascinating to me. I believe that all beings are connected through interdependence. If we look deeply, stripping away all the masks and outer forms, we would find the same core hidden within every being. Yin and Yang evolve from Oneness and eventually return to the origin. |

Dr. Chan Yat Chun I was born an old soul. Thereafter I continue to stay old till this very day. I am not sure when my interest in arts started. Perhaps from drawing classes I received in primary school. I remember distinctively that my teacher loved my drawings, and so did my father. Every piece was pinned to the wall for exhibition. My teacher taught me drawings, sketching and colouring with graphite and colour pencils. That was such a long time ago, I believe this has nurtured and inspired me to be an artist. When it was time to go to university, I asked my father if I could study the fine arts. Then he said you had to die first before you could become famous. Since there was apparently so much hardship and death involved, I decided to choose an easier career path, becoming a doctor. Years went by and I had yet to fulfil my ambition of becoming an artist. As such, I cannot say for sure my life was well spent. At my age, I was too old and uncomfortable to be a student. So, starting around 7 to 10 years ago, I did make some desperate attempts to draw, sketch and paint in my spare time. I tried to learn from art books, and YouTube. I have amassed a sizable collection of art books but didn’t have much time to read them. What I put on the paper or canvas is a bizarre combination of styles, lines and strokes learnt from various artists. My media are colour pencils, graphite, charcoal, oil and water colours. My subject matters are flowers, animals and sceneries. Thus far, I managed to sell 3 pieces of watercolours for charity. I gave most of my paintings away to anyone who showed appreciation. If you look at my paintings closely, you’ll see a lot of imperfections. I ask you not to look too analytically, too critically. With forgiving eyes, you’ll find love, serenity and perhaps poetry in my paintings. And if then you find the urge to go out to enjoy the beauty of the chaotic world we live in, I think I have achieved my aim as an artist. Now in the twilight of my years, by my father’s definition, my fame as an artist is just round the corner. |

Elif Katranci Art is a silent poetry. I paint for therapeutic reasons. It has always been a hobby on the side of my other activities. I live in Singapore for the last 10 years, after having spent 14 years in New York City. I have been painting quite regularly over the last 3 years. I love painting trees, flowers, landscape and abstract in acrylic, oil and spray mediums. I have quite a big passion for the trees as there is not enough messages out there to save them. It is time for me to share my work to a wider audience. My painting skills are gained over time by practicing. I must have painted more than 100 paintings in the last 3 years, but mostly by visiting museums through the 4 countries I lived in (Paris, New York, Singapore and Turkey). Let us not forget all those tutorials available from different masters on the net. Thank you for your support. |

Erni Gunawan Born in Bandung, Indonesia, I am a mother of two with an irrevocable love for art and nature. Apart from painting, I also love flower arrangement, pottery, dancing and cooking. Through my lifelong passion in art, I seek to capture nature’s beauty in various forms. I do so by experimenting with different mediums such as acrylic, sand and gel, in addition to impasto techniques that create textures which heighten the visual impact of my work. Most of my paintings encompass a range of vibrant colours so that those who view them can vicariously feel the excitement and peace which nature brings to me. My genre of art is a mix of post impressionism and contemporary using impasto technique. I hope that my art can give people a sense of hope and evoke feelings of love and joy within them. With paintings displayed across several countries and an increasing number of commission requests, I am very fortunate that my creations are garnering greater exposure and interest. Painting has most certainly grown from a hobby into a profession. |

Evangeline Ang Evangeline Ang, Singaporean, Born 1963 “Art calms the mind & soothes the soul. “ Art has always been something close to my heart, something I enjoyed ever since my days in school. After having spent 2 decades doing my part in a family business coupled with building my own career, I found the calling to embark on my art journey unleashing my desire to translate my fascination for nature, light, colours and textures to creations on canvas. I have always felt that behind every obvious there are always the inconspicuous. Small details and the big picture go hand in hand. This holds true in life and is captured in my work as I explore different mediums to create layers and textures frolicking in a sea of colours. My artworks when viewed from afar, capture the viewer's interest as my subjects are usually bold and vibrant and some are done with an optical illusion. When one looks up close and observes, a different experience emerges as the multitude of different colours hidden amongst the layers of textures bring on a different interest. I have exhibited locally and was awarded as finalist at the Angelico Art Award 2022 with my submission successfully bidded at the event's online auction. In 2022, I also exhibited at Art Expo New York, Art Sante Fe, Art Expo Dallas and Red Dot Miami and in Hong Kong and Turkiey. 2023 kicked off with my work being selected to be exhibited at Art Wynwood presented by Art Miami. Collectors that acquired my pieces found my work intriguing and my hope is for viewers to enjoy my artworks as much as I enjoy creating them. |

Kat Yew Self-taught, with zero arts background, and no arts related training or tutelage, my painting journey to date is one of exploration, discovery, and experimentation. My body of works is primarily acrylic abstracts with a variety of themes ranging from nightscape, space art, seascape, whimsical abstracts, to industrial, geometric, and textured arts. When it comes to painting, I do not have a fixed style, I thrive on varieties, curiosities, and challenges. Every painting is a learning journey for me. I learn by trying, by experimenting. The more I paint, the more I learn. The more I learn, the more I paint. I also learn by studying the works of other artists, paying attention to the different styles, mediums and techniques used. My artistic inspiration comes mostly from my daily life, my surroundings, and the nature. The little things in our life that are often overlooked can sometimes be amazing sources of ideas. Sometimes I paint with a theme or a colour scheme in mind, sometimes I just let my feelings, my emotions take charge. I plan but I do not overly plan my work. I am very much an intuitive painter, occasionally breaking a few art rules here and there. But I do try to maintain some sort of balance and harmony in my paintings, creating abstract pieces that are pleasing to the eyes and at the same time have plenty of rooms for viewers’ imagination to run wild, allowing viewers to interpret the paintings as they wish. It can be what you want it to be. There is no right or wrong. If an art piece is a reflection of the thoughts of an artist, then mine is definitely one of curiosity, mystery and without a doubt the love for colours! And if you think you sense a rebellious streak in some of my paintings, you are not wrong. As the saying goes, “Art speaks where words are unable to explain.” So, come down to Voice of Art - I Exhibition at ION Orchard this March 2023, and join me and other talented artists in our artistic journeys. And do follow me on Instagram @kat_yew and saatchiart.com/katyew for more of my creations. |

Lisa Larson Lee I grew up on the Canadian prairies with the Rocky Mountains in view, near the rugged shores of Vancouver Island, and in lush and verdant Singapore, which I’ve called home for over 20 years. I’ve long been inspired by the natural world and, in particular, by aerial landscapes—pathways, rivers, and gorges; the meandering line where sea meets shore; man-made salt flats; backroads and farmed prairie stretching to the horizon. We’ve left scars on the land, scars that sometimes mirror our own. These elements find their way into my art. Even in my more figurative work, you’ll find a rich history of layers, marks, and colours—a palimpsest: history overwritten without being forgotten—that lead viewers on their own personal journey. I create intuitive, abstract art on canvas, paper, and panel. Working primarily in acrylics, I incorporate various texture mediums, found objects, collage, and metal leaf. Pursuing graphic arts early on, it was my love of writing that eventually won out; I hold a BA in Communications. In 2015, after more than two decades in the corporate world, a dear friend inspired me to get back in touch with my art. I’m self taught primarily, though, while living in London during the worst of Covid (2019-21), I sought refuge in two intensive art programs: with US-based artist Nicholas Wilton, and with UK-based artist and author Louise Fletcher. My work is in private collections in Canada, Finland, Japan, Singapore, Spain, the US, and the UK. |

Megha Nema I do semi abstract acrylic or mixed media paintings and love experimenting with colours, which I consider as my biggest strength. I am born and raised in a small town in India, and have been lucky to be surrounded by variety of flowers and garden. I take inspiration from my fond childhood memories, my family, extensive travels and by the multitude of colours in nature. As I evolve as an artist, I am focusing on shapes and movement to capture emotions and spirit. My current series is ‘Sports’ which I consider as the best combination of both. I want people to be uplifted by my art and have their own story to tell when they see it. |

Megha Singh Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions and desires, it's about sharing the way we personally experience the world, and for Megha it is an extension of her personality. Megha enjoys art because it generates a powerful messages or sentiments. Art is not only a passion for her, but also a talent that has moulded her aesthetic character. As a young girl, she doodled on every empty spot on whatever paper she could get her hands on- and that carefree doodling became her passion. Born in the city of art and culture Kolkata, India, she learnt painting since she was 7 years old. She graduated in Geography but it was a natural step to attain a Diploma in Fine Arts. Over the years, she experimented with oils, acrylic, ink, pen and water colors on canvas as well as paper. She is constantly interested in trying new things, she decided to investigate the realm of Zen Tangle painting. She is really good at it! She came to the realisation that it is a bottomless wellspring of inventiveness. Imagination, originality, and personality emerged with each new stroke and pattern that was applied. She has the impression that the mental pictures that are formed in black and white as one moves through life have a certain kind of awesomeness to them. |

Nidhi S Mathur Originally from India, settled in Singapore for more than a decade now . Formally educated in Design, painting came naturally to me. Being married to a sailor, I travelled the world , imbibing a plethora of art influences, mainly folk art. The myths , legends and scriptures have always fascinated me and jostled me to contemplate on the deeper lessons to be learnt between the lines. Almost all native art has its roots in humanity’s attempt at understanding the mysticism of life and reflecting the ancient beliefs and values of its people. For me too my paintings originate from a certain introspective thought , a balance of life which is beyond the community and cultural diversity that subsequently unfolds with array of colours on different mediums. |

Nina Tan "Nina’s watercolour paintings employs liberal amounts of pigment and water, exaggerating the naturalistic effects of watercolour. Using strong and minimalistic colour schemes, she boldly arranges her compositions in such a way so as to imbue her paintings with a sense of depth and dynamism, accentuated by loose and expressive brushstrokes. Nina believes that a painting should be impressionistic rather than mimetic. The senses should be teased and inspired naturally rather than become ensnared by details. Her paintings usually depict ordinary landscapes transformed by dramatic lighting, prompting viewers to re-examine seemingly normal subjects in a different light." |

ARTIST Petra Sander Born in Germany, Petra Sander started taking art classes while living in the United Arab Emirates. Upon moving to Singapore, she trained and worked in Arts Management. Currently, Petra shares a studio space at Wessex with a group of international female artists who, as a collective, take part in the ArtWalks, and other regular open studio events. Petra’s style of work can be best described as abstract expressionism. This is reflected in her painting process; she begins with a color combination and no expectation of the outcome. Her approach is to find trust in the flow. Petra’s favourite part of the process is mixing acrylic paint with mediums and fluids, moving them across the canvas to eventually let them settle and dry. Only afterwards, in subsequent sessions, will she reign in the color fields with lines and layers to shape organic forms. |

Phan Hien Born in Hanoi in 1980, I, a Vietnamese Singaporean oil painting realist artist, had five years of fine-arts studies as one of my major subjects in Hanoi Architectural University. During my study, I commissioned multiple oil paintings, taking reference from Japanese wood block art. I also had fifteen years of professional career in architecture and construction development in Vietnam and Singapore after graduation. “I curate the objects based on my emotional experience to recreate the mood in my paintings, allowing audiences to emotionally connect with it”. My art approach focuses on the connection between the experimental sense of space observed from the actual context and my sensational emotion. • A subtle background and soft lighting are introduced in majority of my artworks. The set-up environment and the objects’ expressions employed intend to convey emotional messages to audiences. • The mood of the paintings often promotes positive, calm, and relaxing feelings. My on-going studies aid in deepening the integration between my comprehension of the subject matters and personal feeling portrayed through the artworks. Techniques My works often have simplified compositions using limited palette of four colours to establish harmony between the tranquillity feeling of traditional Asian paintings and the details of contemporary realism. Feeling My artworks strive to evoke a peaceful and invigorating feeling in audiences. My latest art pieces display the stillness of objects and refine consensus of space which attract audiences’ attention from near and far. |

Shabri Maheshwari Shabri is a Singapore based artist who derives her inspiration from nature and culture. She is passionate about Indian folk arts. As she hails from Madhya Pradesh (India) she particularly enjoys Gond Art which is a form of tribal painting from her region. Gond paintings use vibrant colors like orange, yellow, blue and red, and are created with articulately drawn lines and dots as the method to bring it to life. With the course of time, this art form has gradually shifted from the mud walls of the houses to canvas and papers. These paintings majorly feature nature as their main subject and its inter connection to life. Although Shabri likes to experiment with different mediums, styles and techniques, her preferred mediums are watercolour and acrylic. Nature and culture sparks joy in her and she translates that joy in her simple and yet intricately detailed paintings. |

In 1988, she pursued her Arts education in California and New York, graduating with a Bachelors in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute. Mastering different artistic techniques, her artworks span across genres of paintings, sculptures, photography, and installation arts. She currently resides in Singapore as a graphic designer and photographer. In 2019, she decided to take up painting once again. She utilizes exotic, vibrant colours to capture the vibrancies of life. Wai Yee employs a contrast of free running strokes, applying many tones of colour through detailed, meticulous painting. Her subject matter exults the celebration of life and to spread positive influence to everyone around her. She is thus extremely particular on her choice of colour and style in capturing the most brilliant moments. Her technique expertly fuses Eastern and Western techniques, calling upon gongbi techniques and inspired by Van Goghian free strokes. She also applies the use of gold leaves to exude luxury and nobility. For the past 4 years, she has been actively involved in various local and international art associations and exhibitions, producing bold, large-scale Chinese painting-inspired works such as “Mad Tree” (2022) and “Raging Tsunami” (2022) for the Melting Pot Art Association Documentary and Art Exhibition at The Education University in Hong Kong. Her smaller works such as “Dancing Lotus” (2022) have also been displayed in the Art in the City Exhibition at The Arts House at the Old Parliament, Singapore. She is also an active contributor to publications within the Melting Pot Art Association, a collaborative collective of eclectic artists hailing from Hong Kong. As part of the Association, she produced, designed, and catalogued for the following journals: “Melting Pot Art Association Documentary and Art Exhibition” (2022), “Art of Melting Pot” (1988) and “Melting Pot Journal” (1987-1988). Wearing her heart on her brush, she expresses her truest feelings through the canvas. To her, colours flow inside her body and strokes are an extension of her arms to reach the furthest dimension. Fundamentally, the process of making a painting is the deepest form of dialogue within herself. |
