Looking Up and Down

The Grey Conspiracy
An exploration of the intricate layers of human experience through a dynamic blend of mixed
media—incorporating rice and acrylic paint to give texture and depth to the narrative of consumption. This
work transcends traditional boundaries, symbolising the consumption of not only material resources, but
also the intangible forces of emotion, thought, and perception. The rice, an unusual medium, brings a
tactile element that enhances the idea of sustenance and decay, while the acrylic paint creates a vibrant
yet somber backdrop that draws attention to both seen and unseen aspects of our existence.
The void, a deliberate presence in the composition, represents an invisible force that is often
overlooked—an unseen conspiracy that is nefariously blind, yet pervasive. This "chosen unseen void”, an
aspect of human nature and society embodies the emotional turmoil and ideologies that shape human
behaviour, compelling us to confront uncomfortable truths that are often forgotten or ignored.
The interplay between macro and micro perspectives from the image as a whole to a single rice grain, to
the sky and ground to dark and light is vital to understanding the deeper meaning of the piece. The artist
invites the audience to examine the relationship between personal and universal, pushing us to
acknowledge the intricate dance between individual experiences and global issues. The artwork is a
deliberate act of creation, evoking a provocative emotional response and encouraging viewers to reflect
on their place within the larger "grey" conspiracy that binds us all.
The grey intersection of the painting relates back to The Grey Conspiracy is a deliberate act of creation
that invites the audience to question their place in a world of unseen forces, it challenges viewers to
confront the discomfort of what is not immediately visible, encouraging a deeper reflection on issues that
shape both individual lives and broader societal structures.
Through this piece, Leong not only challenges our perceptions but urges us to critically examine the fine
balance between macro and micro realities—urging viewers to reconsider perspectives from which they
understand the world around them.
