BIO
Artist - FAN SHAO HUA
Fan Shao Hua (范少华), born in 1963 in Guangzhou, China, is a distinguished contemporary artist renowned for his fusion of traditional Chinese and Western artistic techniques. His early exposure to art came from his father, a skilled calligrapher and painter, which laid the foundation for his artistic journey. At the age of 10, he began formal training in Chinese ink painting at the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Guangzhou.
In 1981, Fan was admitted to the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, where he specialized in oil painting. During his studies, he was influenced by prominent second-generation Lingnan-style artists such as Guan Shanyue and Li Xiongcai, who were leading professors in the Chinese Art Department. This exposure enriched his understanding of the Lingnan style, known for integrating traditional Chinese painting with Western realism. He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. |
Pursuing further education, Fan obtained a Master's degree from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia and later achieved a Ph.D. in Fine Arts Research from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
After relocating to Singapore, Fan's career flourished. In 2000, he won the prestigious 'Painting of the Year Award' at the 19th UOB Painting of the Year Competition. He also received the International Premium Oil Painting Artist Award in Hong Kong in 2008. His works have been exhibited internationally, including in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, and Paris. He is a member of the Singapore Art Society, the Society of Chinese Artists, and the Japan Modern Arts Association. |
Fan's art is characterized by a harmonious blend of Eastern and Western techniques. He skillfully combines Chinese methods like 'ink splash' and 'creased paper background' with Western representational art techniques. His subjects range from Southeast Asian landscapes and portraits to daily life scenes, often infused with surrealistic elements.
A notable aspect of his work is the 'Lotus' series, which delves into themes of human complexity and spiritual growth. Fan draws inspiration from nature, frequently visiting China's countryside and mountains such as Taishan, Lushan, and Huangshan to connect with the environment and infuse his art with natural harmony. Through his innovative approach, Fan Shao Hua continues to push the boundaries of artistic expression, creating works that resonate with both traditional aesthetics and contemporary sensibilities. |
