ABOUT ARITST

I’m Raj, at 61 and always living by my motto, “For art’s sake, it is never too late to dream BIG!” I’m born and happily raised in Singapore. I'm a self-taught emerging artist, and I'm just beginning to dip my toes into the colourful world of contemporary painting. I have a strong interest in art, sustainability, community, and design, with my works demonstrating the beauty of nature, while showcasing what I believe are pivotal to my art - innovation, peace, joy, love, curiosity, wonder and purpose. I earned a diploma in visual communications from NYP and a certificate in graphic arts from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. I've won prizes for my design work from PUMA, Ray-Ban, and more. Currently, I am a creative producer for an events company. For over 40 years, I’ve immersed myself in the art world, continually honing my skills and expanding my knowledge. When I'm not painting, I'm planning my next culinary creation because I created a name for myself in creative cooking as one of the top 9 competitors in MasterChef Singapore, Season 3. “In all honesty, I have no idea where I'm headed, but I'll arrive in time to leave a lasting imprint on my artwork”. My understanding of the harmonious balance of yin and yang, or equilibrium, in life served as the inspiration for my contemporary artwork, ‘Butterflies’ and ‘Foo Dogs.’ In these testing times, my positive reflections are deeply relevant and a beacon of hope. |
ARTWORK
Harmony Size: 92 cm X 122 cm Medium: Acrylic on canvas My acrylic painting on canvas of the two jade stone Foo Dogs against a floral bouquet are believed to symbolize new beginnings, growth and harmony. The symbolism and aesthetic appeal of Foo Dogs continue to inspire contemporary art and design. They are often incorporated into modern interiors as a nod to tradition and protection. “If you feel pulled in by Jade's energy, your spirit is likely looking for direction and awakening. Jade is the guidance your spirit needs to understand the big-picture, and then open yourself up to those new experiences.” The artwork conveys the message that despite these mysterious animals' eccentricities, love and passion exist within them. In my artwork, the butterfly's capacity to emerge from its cocoon and soar might be interpreted as a potent metaphor for escaping confines and restraints. It serves as a reminder to enjoy the small things in life and to appreciate the freedom and beauty of nature. Despite the centuries-old subject matter in my paintings, I guess the interpretation is contemporary and just as stimulating. As sculptures and art, Foo Dogs continue to hold a special place in the hearts of art connoisseurs, decorators worldwide and me as an artist. |
Hold the fort
Dimensions: 60 cm X 60 cm x 0.3 cm (no frame) Medium: Acrylic on plywood panel My acrylic painting on plywood of these 2 vintage Foo Dogs is a testament to the richness of Chinese cultural heritage, blending mythology, art, and philosophy into powerful symbols of protection and harmony. These canines give an eye-catching pop of color to any living area with their striking washy blue color on white porcelain material set against a red background. In a world where traditions often fade, Foo Dogs stand as enduring sentinels of a culture that deeply values the guardianship of its heritage and the harmony of its people. The butterfly in my painting reminds me to embrace nature’s beauty and freedom. The butterfly’s ability to transform and take flight can remind us of our inner strength and resilience. Despite the centuries-old subject matter in my paintings, I guess the interpretation is modern and just as intriguing. As sculptures and art, Foo Dogs and Butterflies continue to hold a special place in the hearts of art connoisseurs, decorators worldwide and me as an artist. |
