Born in Singapore in 1939, Mr Tung developed a passion for art at an early age. He studied at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), where he received formal training in painting and developed a strong foundation in both Chinese and Western art. His artistic growth was influenced by Singapore's pioneer generation of artists, whose works encouraged experimentation while remaining rooted in local culture and the natural environment.

Mr Tung's artistic journey was characterised by constant exploration and innovation. He travelled extensively throughout Singapore and overseas, drawing inspiration from changing landscapes, traditional villages, gardens, rivers, and mountain scenery. Rather than simply recording what he saw, Mr Tung interpreted these scenes through expressive brushwork, vibrant colours, and simplified forms, creating paintings that conveyed both the beauty of nature and his emotional response to it.

Today, Mr Tung is remembered for his lifelong dedication to art, education, and the celebration of Singapore's natural and cultural heritage. His paintings continue to inspire audiences through their expressive energy, vibrant colours, and thoughtful interpretation of the world around him, securing his place among Singapore's notable modern artists.

ABOUT ARTIST

Tung Yue Nang

Tung Yue Nang (董瑞能, 1939–2021) was a distinguished Singaporean painter and art educator who played an important role in the development of modern Singapore art. Known for his expressive landscapes, vibrant floral paintings, and semi-abstract compositions, he combined Eastern artistic traditions with Western painting techniques to create a unique visual style. Throughout his career, Mr Tung was dedicated not only to painting but also to nurturing young artists through education.

Working primarily in oil and acrylic, Mr Tung developed a style that balanced realism with abstraction. His bold compositions, energetic brushstrokes, and harmonious use of colour gave his landscapes a strong sense of movement and atmosphere. Flowers also became one of his favourite subjects, allowing him to explore colour, light, and texture in increasingly expressive ways.

Alongside his artistic practice, Mr Tung devoted many years to art education, sharing his knowledge and encouraging younger generations to appreciate creativity and artistic expression. His paintings have been exhibited widely in Singapore and internationally and are included in both private and public collections. Through numerous exhibitions, he earned recognition as one of Singapore's respected contemporary artists.
